Do I Need A Life Coach? Discover Ways a Life Coach Can Support You
May 06, 2025
Do I need a life coach? Yes and no.
I think everyone could use a life coach, because life-ing is hard. But, coaching is not meant for clients who are in a crisis and need more professional support from a specialist like a therapist or mental health professional.
So with that being said, coaching would be great for you if you’re looking for support around a whole wide-range of topics, but some common topics include:
- uncovering blocks and limiting beliefs
- reducing stress and burnout
- expanding understanding around a challenging situation or circumstance
- boosting self-confidence and taking steps forward towards a goal
- navigating transitions like career or relationship changes
- cultivating more creativity
- creating and sticking to a spiritual / wellness routine
- staying motivated and accountable to overcome obstacles
- developing action plans
- enhancing leadership skills or job effectiveness
- and so many more!
Coaching is my favorite modality for working with clients, because not only is it effective, it’s focused on empowering you to find the wisdom within as a resourceful and whole person.
What To Expect In a Coaching Container?
Overarching Intention
When we enter a coaching container together, regardless of the number of weeks together, you'll start by naming an overarching intention. This is the big-picture focus we’ll return to throughout our time: the deeper desire, shift, or transformation you’re calling in. It might be something like reclaiming your time, deepening your self-trust, activating your voice or navigating a life transition.
That intention becomes the compass for our work. (Please note: Intentions and overarching goals vary greatly so it's best to discuss in a discovery call and talk it through before you sign on with any specific coach.)
Within each individual session, we’ll set a clear session agreement, a specific focus for that call.
The typical outline of a coaching session is:
- Set the Agreement and Measure for what you will be working towards. Something you want to make progress on. This could be a current challenge you’re facing, a decision you’re sitting with, a pattern you’re noticing or simply something you want to explore and process out loud.
We’ll also clarify what progress or insight would feel meaningful for you to walk away with by the end of the call, so that our time together is intentional and directed, without ever being rigid.
- Evoke Awareness — The coach will ask powerful questions around the subject you’re bringing into your session and the dialogue revolves around what comes up for the client. It’s a wonderful way to be held in a safe space, be witnessed and to have someone ask questions that may give you insights around a new or deeper perspective.
- Actions, Planning & Accountability — This part of the session is focused on key learnings, next steps and what can support you in taking those steps. It doesn’t always have to be focused externally on goals and accomplishments, it can also focus on ways to nurture yourself and thinking outside the box of what would be nourishing for you to move this work forward, or hell maybe even what would bring you more joy!
Each session is a step on the path. And the container as a whole is the sacred space that holds your unfolding. Because life doesn’t move in straight lines, our sessions will flow with what’s alive and real for you. while still keeping your larger intention in view.
This is your space. We shape it together in partnership, which is why I always recommend a chemistry call as the very first step.
How does life coaching work?
It’s most important to understand the framework for coaching. So let me explain!
ICF (International Coaching Federation) certified coaches have defined Ethics and Core Competencies that guide the process around coaching and the relationship between coach and client. Key takeaways are:
1. Competence is a Big Deal
Let’s be real, you don’t want to get coached by someone who’s making things up as they go.
That’s where ICF Core Competencies come in. Coaches are trained to ask the right questions, listen deeply and provide feedback that actually helps you.
Think of it like hiring a personal trainer: you want someone who knows the moves, not someone who’s Googling “how to lift weights” during your session.
The competencies ensure your coach knows what they’re doing and can help you make real progress. (Full disclosure: I have received 60 hours of holistic coaching training and am working towards 100 hours of coaching hours to obtain the ICF ACC credential.)
2. It’s All About You, the Client
Coaching centers the client, first and foremost.
The coaching process isn’t about the coach telling you what to do, but rather helping you find your own answers.
The Core Competencies make sure the coach is constantly tuning in to your needs. It’s like having a GPS system that always recalculates to find the best route based on your goals, not someone else’s idea of where you should be.
3. No One’s Out Here Trying to Control You
A good coach isn’t there to tell you what’s right or wrong. They’ll never pressure you to follow a path that doesn’t feel good for you.
Their role is to empower you, not to manipulate or force decisions. Coaches are trained to respect your autonomy and help you find the best path for YOU. You’re the one in the driver’s seat; your coach is just there with the guardrails to guide you in the process as you drive along the coaching road (metaphorically speaking).
4. Confidentiality is King
It’s like Vegas: What happens in the coaching session, stays in the coaching session. Confidentiality is one of the biggest ethical standards. It’s all about trust. You can feel safe sharing your thoughts, your dreams, and maybe even your deep memories about what holds the most shame in the safe space with a coach.
All this to say, that these guidelines ensure that your coaching experience is professional, ethical, and respectful. They're the secret sauce that makes coaching work and keeps it awesome. It’s signing up for a partnership that’s 100% focused on you helping you level up in life. An experience everyone could benefit from when you feel called to make a change and work towards on a goal.
Going Deep: What My Kind of Coaching Really Looks Like
This isn’t surface-level mindset work or basic accountability coaching. This is deep, brave, soul-rooted work.
Coaching with me means creating space to explore the parts of yourself that often get overlooked like the hidden beliefs, the inner critics, the energy that gets stuck when you’re trying to move forward but feel blocked. Together, we’ll untangle old narratives and bring compassion to the parts of you that learned to protect, perform or please. We'll work to integrate those parts, not shame them, so they can stop running the show from the shadows.
This is a vulnerable process. Coaching invites you to show up honestly, not as who you think you should be, but as who you are, right now.
And while it can feel tender to speak things aloud you’ve maybe never said before, that’s exactly where the transformation begins. Because when you’re truly witnessed, perspective shifts. Energy moves. The story changes. You open to change.
You don’t need to be fearless to do this work. You just need to be willing. Willing to explore your depths. Willing to stay in the conversation, even when it’s uncomfortable. Willing to meet yourself with curiosity and set the judgment aside.
That’s the kind of devotion that makes this work powerful. And I’m here to walk beside you every step of the way.
So, looping back to the original question: do I need a life coach?
That answer is entirely up to you.
What’s whispering to you right now? What kind of support would help you feel more rooted, more energized, more honest, more authentically you?
Only you can know when or if it’s time. But if you’re feeling the pull toward deeper self-trust and soulful guidance, I’m here and I’d be honored to walk with you.
